To add to this, I have a simpler answer: Buy as much ram as you can afford. Especially now since laptops past mid 2012 aren't upgradeable (for all intents and purposes) • Macs age incredibly well. If you like to hold onto your mac computers for a while, there's a good chance you can be using it several years down the line. • Because of that, you should always go for as much RAM as you can afford (in my opinion), and screw everyone else who says otherwise. It'll pay off when you sell the laptop later or when you give the laptop to someone 3-5 years later and it's still usable. I see people with 2014 retina macbooks that they just bought like two months ago, and they'll swear at the dumb thing and say it's slow sometimes, especially when getting work done.
